With the weather heating up and the school year winding down, many students are preparing for summer break – a time for travel, learning, working, and recharging. To find out how members of the OHS community are spending their summer, a survey was conducted, gathering 26 responses from students across all grade levels, from 7th through 12th grade. The largest number of responses came from 9th graders.

Many students are using their break to stay academically engaged, enrolling in summer courses to get a head start on next year’s material. One student received a scholarship to attend The Harid Conservatory’s Intensive in Boca Raton, Florida, where they’ll participate in four weeks of specialized dance training.
Travel is a major theme too, with approximately 81% of students planning trips near and far. Some notable plans include:
- Traveling to New York, followed by an Outward Bound hiking course in the Rocky Mountains.
- An international journey through Japan, China, and Singapore.
- A high-adventure trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for backpacking and outdoor activities with a scout group.
Some students are lifeguarding or working at local gyms. Others are volunteering at community food kitchens. Additionally, some seniors are planning to work part-time jobs while preparing to head off to college.
Not every plan involves travel or work. Many students are looking forward to spending time reading, pursuing personal hobbies, or simply relaxing and enjoying the warm weather.
It’s awesome to see the variety of plans from our peers this summer. Whether it’s travel, work, or just enjoying the sunshine, it looks like everyone is making the most of their break!
